ESSURE® & Tubal Ligation
When Your Family is Complete…Choose Essure®
One of the most important health decisions for men and women is family planning. Nearly half of all pregnancies (46%) are unintended and may occur during a month in which a form of birth control was actually used.
If you have completed child-bearing, the risk and expense of hormonal contraception, as well as worrying about unplanned pregnancies, is unnecessary. Essure®, a hormone-free, non-surgical, permanent birth control procedure, may be an excellent option for you.
"The whole process has been so simple. I am confident that the procedure worked and I do not need to worry anymore about becoming pregnant. That is a big weight off my shoulders. I can't emphasize enough how easy the whole thing was. I was able to go to a familiar and comfortable place to have the procedure, it was quick and my recovery time was nothing. I couldn't ask for anything more." – Cheryl

Essure is also convenient. Gynecologist Dr. Robert Bass performs the procedure right in our Plantation, Florida office, so you don’t have to go to the hospital or surgery center. Unlike traditional or laparoscopic tubal ligation, there is no cutting, bleeding, or complications of general anesthesia. Essure has been FDA-approved since 2002, and is 99.8% effective. Over 250,000 Essure procedures have been performed, and it is a covered benefit by most insurance plans.
What Can I Expect?
During the procedure, Dr. Bass passes a pencil-thin telescope (hysteroscope) through the vagina and cervix into the uterus (womb). He gently places micro-inserts in the fallopian tube openings, resulting in a tissue barrier that prevents sperm from reaching an egg.
Essure is typically a 20 to 30 minute in-office procedure with little or no down time. You can typically resume your normal activities, including exercise, work, and sexual relations, the following day. There is no effect on monthly menstrual bleeding or the onset of menopause.
Three months after the Essure procedure, Dr. Bass will order a special X-ray to confirm that your fallopian tubes are completely blocked, thus virtually eliminating the risk of unintended pregnancy.
Traditional Laparascopic Tubal Ligation
For patients interested in a more traditional approach to sterilization, Dr. Bass also performs laparoscopic tubal ligation, commonly referred to as “getting your tubes tied,” in the hospital or an outpatient center. If you are having a C-section, Dr. Bass can perform the procedure immediately following the C-section.
During tubal ligation, Dr. Bass will make a few small incisions in your belly button area, insert the laparoscope, and pass surgical instruments through the laparoscope to cut or tie the fallopian tubes to permanently prevent pregnancy.
