Pelvic Floor Muscle Training
If you’re experiencing urinary incontinence or vaginal discomfort after delivery, you might benefit from pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT).
Pelvic floor muscles span the bottom of the pelvis, stretching like a hammock from the tailbone at the back to the pubic bone in front. They support the bladder, bowel, and uterus in women. The natural changes of both pregnancy and delivery (either vaginal or C-section) impact the pelvic floor muscles and connective tissue, often causing discomfort and pain for women either during pregnancy or after delivery.
During pregnancy, almost half of women experience pelvic pain, and stress urinary incontinence can affect up to 70% of women.
After delivery, the pressure from the baby and delivery and hormonal changes can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, resulting in annoying symptoms like stress urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, urinary frequency, and painful intercourse.
At FEMCARE OB/GYN, we offer individualized pelvic floor physical therapy to address these postpartum-related symptoms in our office in Plantation, Florida.
Pelvic floor muscle training is a non-surgical, painless method of retraining the pelvic floor muscles that control bladder, bowel, and sexual function.
Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles will help you to actively support your bladder and bowel, reducing the likelihood of leaking.
70-90% of patients treated realizes significant improvement or are cured with this type of therapy.
PFMT is indicated for:
- Urinary incontinence
- Overactive bladder / urinary frequency
- Urgency
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Fecal incontinence
- Chronic constipation
- Painful sexual intercourse
Depending on your specific condition, you will typically have up to 8 visits, once a week. Like other muscles in your body, your pelvic floor muscles will become stronger with a repetitive exercise program.
By attending your therapy sessions and following the exercise recommendations from your pelvic floor trainer, you should have a successful outcome. You will typically notice changes in your symptoms within 3-4 visits.
Your first visit will take about one hour. Follow-up visits are usually 30 minutes long. The first visit will include a consultation with the nurse. She will obtain a health history, explain the therapy, and answer any questions you may have.
You will then participate in your first therapy session. The nurse will teach you how to isolate your pelvic floor muscles and instruct you on how to perform the prescribed pelvic muscle exercises.
Muscle training is individualized. The nurse will determine the treatment best suited for you and prescribe a course of therapy for your specific condition. You will be given an exercise prescription each week to complete prior to your next therapy session.
Pelvic floor muscle training is typically covered by insurance, but may require pre-authorization.
